What is in a name?
A long time ago, I came up with some worldbuilding project that must have been some way to cope with the loss of one of my best friends during my teenage years. Real Kingdom Hearts/Final Fantasy VII Rebirth-coded with the whole “alternate universe fix-it” kind of shit.
I wrote so many bits and pieces, it was kind of ridiculous. A lot of it is reminiscent of the writing you’d find in the early Bungie games and a few entries in Destiny, though I didn’t really play those. You can thank all the archives they had. Really tickled the brain, that.
A piece:
He stared through the glass towards his home planet. Searing it into his memory before they destroyed everything on it… everyone on it. His love was perhaps sitting in the greenhouse she so admired, watering her [roses?]. She always loved [roses]. He pressed his hands against the glass, wishing to break through, to free her, to join her.
—
He pressed against the glass of time, feeling it crack beneath his fingers. He stepped into the tides of space, seeing the water part for his feet.
—
After many dead-ends (hundreds? seventeen of them, perhaps) he found himself staring at them from the distance. He died. She died. He broke through the glass, looked down at them again. Another failed timeline. He swam through the rising tides to a new world. But it was all the same.
Nothing ever changed.
